Three Things to know about Miami: HURRICANES

Miami is a beautiful city with a lot to offer, but it's also a city that's prone to hurricanes. So, if you're planning a trip to Miami or live here, it's important to be prepared.

Here are three things to know about Miami when it comes to hurricanes:

1. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, but the most active month of hurricanes is usually in September.

That means that if you're planning a trip to Miami during hurricane season, it's important to be flexible with your travel dates. And if you live in Miami, having a hurricane plan in place is important.

2. Hurricanes can be scary, especially if the news tells us we're in the “cone of probability” (or as we call it in Miami, the cone of death). But if it's still a while out before the storm, don't get too worried, because most of the time, the cone shifts and we're okay.

In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to prepare:

  • Stock up on food and water.

  • Make sure you have a battery-powered radio and flashlight.

  • Secure any loose items around your home, like patio furniture and garbage cans.

  • And have a plan for where you'll go if you need to evacuate.

3. Most injuries that happen around hurricanes happen AFTER the storm because people get curious and start wandering outside and that's when they get themselves into trouble.

So, if you're in Miami after a hurricane, be careful! Stay away from downed power lines, and don't go wading in floodwaters. Next time a hurricane is headed towards Miami, don't panic. Just remember these three things:

Be prepared.

Stay safe.

And don't forget the snacks!
